Meals In Jars Formula

For Creating Your Own Meals In Jars Recipes

What I have found that works best for me is to make a list of five different categories. Under each category list all of the different ingredients that are available on the market that come in the freeze dried or dehydrated form.

1)Freeze Dried Meats
2)Pasta, Rice, Dried Beans and all of the types of Dehydrated potatoes such as sliced, cubed, hash browns etc.
3)Freeze dried and dehydrated vegetables and fruits
4)Sauce and Seasoning Mixes
5)Dehydrated Cheeses

The quart sized canning jar will hold four cups of ingredients so we only have a four cup limitation to work with.  We will not count the sauce mix as we can shake it down in the jar filling in all the empty spaces.

So now that we have made our lists and have sterilized the jars and checked for cracks and chips on the rims we are ready to create a new jar meal recipe.

I am now going to choice a Freeze dried meat from the first category. For this example I will pick freeze dried ham chunks knowing that I only have a four cup limitation I will use 1 cup for the ham and add it to the 1 quart canning jar.

Moving to the second category I will pick dehydrated sliced potatoes and use 1 ½ cups of the dehydrated slice potatoes, I know that I still want to add cheese to the top of this dish so I am saving 1 cup just for the cheese.

Now on to category three freeze dried and dehydrated vegetables and fruit. I have room for freeze dried bell peppers so I am going to add ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons of freeze dried bell peppers and 2 tablespoons of freeze dried chopped onions.

Next we will move on to the sauces and mixes category and I will pick the recipe for 1 can of cream of mushroom soup mix (the powdered version) make up the recipe and shake it down in the jar.

We only have one cup left that we can add to our jar and I saved that for the cheese. Because I will want rehydrate the cheese when I go to make this meal I will put 1 cup freeze dried cheader cheese in a baggie before placing jar. We have used up all of our space in the jar the last thing we need to add is a 300 cc oxygen absorber or you can use your jar attachment to your food saver to extract all of the air out of the jar to seal it. This is how this jar meal will be shelf stable for 7-10 years.

Choose a method of labeling and attaching the directions to this meal. When you store the meals put them in a cool dark place.

When you are ready to cook your jar meal creation figuring out how much water to add is a little tricky I start with 2 ½ cups of water and take into consideration the ingredients that are in the jar meal. If you are making this meal on the stove top you can easel y add more water until you get to the consistency you would like.

What I do is start with 2 ½ to 3 cups of water and bring it to a boil turn off the stove add the jar meal and let it rest and rehydrate for 10-20 minutes then resume simmering on low heat string every few

minutes  until the pasta and veggies are tender adding a little more water as needed until you know how much water it will take for that jar meal you will want to have a pen and paper handy to keep track of your results.

I hope this helps getting you started on making your own meal in jar creations to build your long term food storage.
I am adding a link where you can find ingredients for your jar meals.
