Hello, my name is Jennifer I have created 30 dinners in jar recipes to get you started in your long term food storage.
I wanted to begin building my family's food storage with meals that they would eat in the event of an emergency, job loss, economic collapse, or hyperinflation. The list of things could go on and on. As I soon learned there was not much out the there in the way of recipes using only freeze dried and dehydrated ingredients, I set out to created and learn how to make these meals for my family.
As a result, my blog, http://rainydayfoodstorage.blogspot.com ,was born. I felt that there were folks out there, like myself, trying to find recipes for cooking with these types of ingredients. I am happy to say I was successful and delighted that I am able to share these unique recipes with you.
You will be using a method some have called “dry pack canning” but it's actually called Vacuum Packing. No liquid or pressure canning is necessary. If you chose to use the freeze dried meat in the recipes NOTE; The repacking of freeze Dried Meat Must be done with in 24-48 hours of opening the can and must be done in a dry environment. Once repacked you must use an oxygen absorber to make sure there is a vacuum oxygen free environment. Use a 300 cc oxygen absorber for each jar. This will make the vacuum packing effective. You can use a food saver with a jar attachment for this in place of the oxygen absorber, but will need to make sure your machine is designed to be used with the jar attachment. You can also pack in mylar bags (the ones that are silver-colored),but again need to use the oxygen absorber. This size I use is designed to absorb a gallon size amount of air, but I'd rather err on the side of over-vacuum than not enough. NO . You can not use food saver clear plastic bags for long term storage. They are not designed for that purpose. When I say “long term” I'm talking 7-10 years.

ReplyDeleteI've been thinking how I would love to find a curry chicken meal in a jar! ((Hugs))
Can I ask how you can keep these food from spoiling without refrigeration and for over 5 years? If it is true I would buy the formula.
ReplyDeleteYou have to put oxygen absorbers in the jars. They will keep for 7-10 years.
DeleteNo different than canned veggies at your local grocery store. The expiration date on canned goods is simply a guaranteed fresh date but will last 4-5 years or longer
DeleteI use a FoodSaver vacuum system. No need for oxygen Absorber Packets (OAP). Kept in a cool, dry, dark place will last 5-7 years easy

Deletei am trying to find out how to buy it, where do you go to get it?
ReplyDeleteWell, I can hardly believe it, I was able to purchase the pdf book. When I clicked on add to cart, a little box appeared on the right lower part of the screan. I have been trying to get this book for months.
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome about the gluten free but I was wondering if your recipes are cow's milk free and if it worth purchasing this?
ReplyDeleteI have done several of the meals-in-a-jar with powdered coconut, almond or soy milk (when it calls for milk).
ReplyDeleteDry almond milk??? Which type works best??
Deletewill you explain the difference in your book and formula? When ordering the formula do I also get the recipes from the pdf?
ReplyDeleteI just purchased the Meals in Jars book and the Sauces and Mixes book; Sauces/MIxes downloaded and printed just fine, but I cannot get the Meals in Jars to print....downloaded just fine. Can you help me??
ReplyDeleteWhat is the shelf life of these recipes if kept in a dark dry place?
ReplyDeleteWould it be possible to answer some of these questions on your page, as there are some I would like to see the answers to?
ReplyDeleteYour purchase cart is not working. No response from either tab.

ReplyDeleteJust to let others out there know the $8.00 you spend on the Meal in a jar formula does not come with recipes. It is 5 pages which could be 2 if it wasn't done in a font size for the blind to read. It is also filled with fluff info like making sure your jars don't have any chips. The formula requires the use of sauce mixes and spice mixes which are not included. The instructions for cooking what you have put together is very vague and requires a lot of trial and error on your part. I have some experience in this type of storage and I was looking for something that I could use to convert some of my regular recipes to dried storage. This was not it. Not worth the price.

ReplyDeleteYour Beef Stew Seasoning Mix in Dinner Meals in a Jar has two places where it calls for 2 Tablespoons. What are the ingredients that are missing from the list? Everything sounds wonderful and my mother and I are getting together to make a bunch of them. Thanks for all the recipes!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to trying your recipes all I need to find is the ingredients here in Alberta, Canada. Will update when I find the ingredients.

ReplyDeleteHow many servings in your jar recipes?? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteQuestion: In the "Beef Stew Seasoning Mix" recipe there are a few places where it states "2 Tablespoons" without an ingredient after. Are those typos or missing ingredients? Thank you for such a great idea!
